Volvo to introduce plug-in diesel-electric hybrid by 2012

Volvo will launch its first series-production plug-in hybrid car in 2012

According to a press release from Volvo, the Swedish car manufacturer will launch its first series-production plug-in hybrid car by 2012. This vehicle will be fitted with a fuel-efficient diesel engine and a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor, and its combined range would be about 1,200km.

According to the statement from Volvo, ‘Pure electric power from the battery will cover the daily transport needs of 75% of drivers. For longer distances, an efficient diesel hybrid engine will automatically take over when the battery energy levels start to run low. CO2 emissions will be less than 50g/km while mileage figures would be around 148.6mpg.’

‘The new Volvo plug-in will be a truly enjoyable car to drive, featuring Volvo's high safety and comfort standards. At the same time, CO2 levels and fuel consumption will be as low as half that available on the market today,’ says Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

Ferrari 458

The new Ferrari is badged 458 Italia and has a mid-mounted V8 like the F430 it will replace.

It features a new, 4,499cc engine developing 562bhp and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

The aerodynamically efficient shape also generates downforce.

The car was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September before going on sale next spring, with a price of about £150,000

BMW's hybrid X6 accelerates nonsense about fast low-emission cars

BMW is launching the 'world's most powerful hybrid' at Frankfurt motor show but its eco-friendly claims are weak

It's the holy grail for motorists with a green conscience – a high-performance eco-friendly hybrid car. Well, that is what BMW will have us believe when it unveils its latest model at the Frankfurt motor show in Germany next week.

The show is likely to see a stream of new hybrids, cars that combine a combustion engine with an electric motor for improved fuel efficiency. And pole position is likely to be taken by BMW's ActiveHybrid X6, which it styles the "world's most powerful hybrid".

The new X6 goes from 0-60 mph in under six seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

But the company gives equal prominence to its pitch that the new hybrid is "eco-friendly", because its carbon emissions are 20% less than those of a regular X6.

For a few days last month you could read the same claim on the website of the Energy Saving Trust, the "impartial" adviser on energy efficiency set up by the British government.

But is it too good to be true? Of course. As one incredulous reader who spotted the story on the Trust's website pointed out: "The Trust is promoting a car as eco-friendly with emissions TWICE that of my 6 year old Honda Civic hybrid!"

The ActiveHybrid X6's official CO2 emissions rating with the European Union is 231 grams per kilometre. That compares badly with the EU's 2012 target for average emissions from new cars of 120 grams. It is also higher than the emissions from most of the new Lexus hybrid range and more than twice the emissions of a Toyota Prius, for instance.

The fact that it is better than the regular X6's rating of 299 grams per kilometre does not make it eco-friendly, I am afraid. The claim is greenwash.

I suspect we are going to see a rash of these high-performance high-emission hybrids masquerading as green. Back in the lab, BMW is developing a hybrid "supercar" that will reach 155 mph and 0-60 mph in less than five seconds.

Sure, hybrids are more fuel-efficient than the equivalent old models. The key is that the fuel does not have to be burned in inefficient surges as the car accelerates and brakes. It can be burned efficiently in a smooth flow, and the energy transferred to a battery that supplies the electric motor that drives the car itself. The battery can also make use of energy generated during braking.

But to call these high-performance models eco-friendly, or low-emissions as they burn up the autobahn is nonsense. They are, in reality, slightly less polluting gas-guzzlers.

The Energy Saving Trust seems to take a similar view. When my correspondent pointed out the dodgy nature of the car's green credentials, the offending story swiftly disappeared from its site. "Once we noticed it, we removed it straight away," a spokesman told me.

The rise of these new hybrids has important implications for green-minded legislators. For instance, it should increase the pressure on London's mayor to reconsider his blanket exemption from congestion charges for hybrid cars. Surely, only truly low-emitters should qualify.

Interestingly, the BMW PR promotes the idea that the driver of the hybrid X6 can "experience silence without coming to a stop", while the electric motor is running alone.

It sounds fun. But speaking as a pedestrian, I'm a bit scared at the idea of a car that can go from 0 to 60mph in less than six seconds without making any noise. Green or not, it sounds like a stealth killer.

2010 Honda Civic

Honda will unveil the next generation (ninth) Civic in 2010. Here is an exclusive rendering of what reports suggest the future car may looks like. Based on the OSM Concept unveiled by Honda at the British Motor Show, the future little Honda will likely look more aggressive in its European form and hopefully this look will spill over into North America.

Although Honda has not announced plans to bring the hatchback version of the Civic back to the U.S., we chose this rendering to give us all something to drool over. For Euro Civic fans, sources indicate that the future Civic hatchback will carry over the current single strip light cluster at the rear, but the split rear screen has been dropped to improve visibility.

Honda currently makes two different versions of the Civic. Just like the Accord, the car offered in Europe is a different design and rides on a different platform. The last two generations of the Civic in the U.S. have taken the car away from the youth and turned it into mom and pop’s second car. Gone are the days of the performance-oriented double-wishbone front suspension (2001), instead we get more interior room. It may be reliable, but it lost most of its passion.

The true hope is that with the 2010 update, we will get back the hatchback or at least something similar to the sporty design from our rendering of Honda’s own OSM Concept. Honda make it dependable, but make sure it has a pulse.

Nissan launches 2 new cars in India

Nissan Motor Corporation launched two new car models in Mumbai on Wednesday as a part of an aggressive India expansion plan by Japan's third-largest automaker.

The new versions of Nissan's X-Trail sport utility vehicle and luxury Teana sedan was unveiled during a smoke and light show. Nissan Motors has plans to launch seven models by 2012 of which five models will be made in India.

"India is the single biggest country in Nissan's investment plan in 2009," said Kiminobu Tokuyama, chief executive and Managing Director of Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd.

The company was targeting a more than five per cent market share in the Indian market going forward, Tokuyama said. The auto firm also plans to up its dealers from the present five to 55 by 2012, he said.

He declined to specify exactly how much of Nissan's fiscal year 2009 capital expenditure budget of 350 billion Japanese yen ($3.6 billion) will be directed to India as the company works to diversify its product line, raise its market share and transform India into a global production hub.

Currently, Nissan ships cars to India ready which are made in Japan, incurring a 109 percent import duty. The retail price of the new X-Trail starts at 2 million rupees ($42,670) and the new Teana at 2.1 million rupees ($43,121) has thwarted sales, executives said.

Since Nissan began selling cars in India in 2004, it has only sold about 1,000 X-Trail vehicles, and just 300 Teana sedans, executives said.

Tokuyama said Nissan's first India-made car -- a new version of the hatchback that now sells under the Micra brand in Europe and the March brand in Japan -- would roll out of its Chennai factory, in southern India, in May 2010.

That factory is the centerpiece of a seven-year, 45 billion rupee ($920 million) investment plan undertaken with France's Renault, which owns 44 percent of Nissan.

Ford Could Bring Out its Small Car this Month

The Indian car market is now in a glorious period. There is also a fast emerging luxury car market but the most expanding segment is that of the small car. Many companies, realizing the flowering love for the small cars in the country are coming up with new models or introducing new variants for the existing models, and so there is never a scarcity in this segment.

The next in the queue is Ford with its small car, codenamed B517. The company has been long working on the project and this seems to be the right time to make it public. The company is expected to showcase its small car in Indian this month. But the car will not hit the roads this year, it will be at least March next year for the car to get launched. After B517 gets launched in India it will also be exported globally including the African and Asia-Pacific countries.

The B517 will be available in both petrol and diesel variants. It was said that the diesel version of the car will have a 1.5-litre engine, but now it is expected to be launched powered by a 1.4-litre Duratorq engine, similar to the one used in Ford Ikon and Ford Fiesta. The other option will be a 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Chiefly designed for the Indian market, the car once launched will pose a good completion to models like the Volkswagen Polo, and new Chevy Spark. The pricing of the B517 is not yet revealed. This small car is expected to enter the Indian car market with really big promises.

All-Electric Volvo C30 BEV

The Swedish luxury auto manufacturer Volvo has revealed its C30 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The car company is presently working on launching its first plug-in hybrid car by 2012. As a result, Volvo is evaluating the commercial and technological viability of the all-electric C30 BEV, which is fitted with a lithium-ion battery that can be fully charged in eight hours.

The Volvo C30 BEV has a range of 150 km. The automotive major has built a few prototype units of the C30 BEV this year, which it has been testing extensively. In addition to focusing on performance and safety, research has also been carried out on the integration of the electric propulsion system with the rest of the car.

The C30 car is the first model of Volvo that runs on electric power. The Volvo C30 BEV is excellent for driving in the city traffic and its relatively low weight makes it particularly suitable for this driving condition. As electric cars are primarily expected to be used in and around cities and for daily commuting, Volvo has paid special attention to the weight of the car and its performance in congested city conditions.

Volvo perceives that car buyers must feel that the car should be attractive both to drive and own. In order to ensure this, Volvo ensures that its electric car is comfortable and safe and offer similar levels of performance as cars that run on other power sources. The C30 BEV project will help Volvo develop more electric cars in future.

The Volvo C30 BEV is limited to a top speed of about 130km/h and it can accelerate from zero to 100km in less than 11 seconds.

Accident claim for your car?

Every car accident insurance claim starts with a car accident. If you are the owner of the car and want to claim for damages, you should report the accident to your insurance company at the first opportunity. This will officially set in motion the claim process.

Usually, an insurance company settles the claim based only on the adjuster/surveyor's report on the extent of the damage to your car. And if you are satisfied with the claim your insurance company has offered to you then the issue is settled. But what do you do if you think the claim amount offered by your insurance company is not right?

In most cases apart from the trauma of an accident the next biggest ordeal could be the long negotiating process a non-agreement on the claims amount could spark off with the insurance company!

So how do you negotiate a claim to get it fully or at least the maximum amount? What do the insurance companies usually do during a negotiation process? What are your rights and when and how do you exercise them?

The following is a comprehensive guide to give you an insight into the various possibilities involved in negotiating accident claims for cars.

Understanding the basics is important

Perhaps the first thing that you should do in case your car is damaged in an accident is report it to your insurance company within the time frame as mentioned in your car insurance agreement.

You could also do your best to get as many details of the accident as possible like taking pictures of your damaged vehicles and any injuries sustained. You could also get in touch with the witnesses to the accident who could be a big plus later on to help prove your insurance claim.

Fill up the claim form with all facts mentioning the claim amount you believe your claim is worth.

Support your claim with all related documents including your medical bills if any, the first information report (FIR), if any, in case of accident involving third party injury or damage and the original estimate of repairs obtained from the workshop. This will put you in an advantageous position in case there is an impasse on the claims amount settlement.

The estimation process: Know your rights

After you have submitted your claim and before a claims adjuster or a surveyor from the insurance company who deals exclusively with claims contacts you regarding your claim, the insurance company will look into your policy details to know the extent of its coverage, the deductibles if any and also the coverage limits that may affect your claim.

That is whether your car accident policy is the Motor Policy A - Act Only Risk which is also known as third party risk or the more sensible Motor Policy B which is otherwise known as comprehensive insurance policy. It is always a sensible option to go for a comprehensive insurance policy for your car.

Physical assessment

After this initial check on your car policy coverage and depending on the claim amount, the adjuster/surveyor will physically visit the site or visit the accident site, talk to witnesses or refer to the police complaint if any to decide on the claim amount.

Usually many insurance companies have their own in-house adjusters/surveyors to assess the damage and decide on the claim amount, usually for claims below Rs.20, 000. But in some cases the in-house adjuster/surveyor assesses damages worth more than Rs. 20, 000 which is illegal.

There are provisions in the Insurance Act regarding that has specific rules about who qualifies for carrying out an assessment or survey of the damaged car in case the claim amount is more than Rs 20, 000. According to the Insurance Act it is mandatory that only an independent surveyor can do the assessment for all claims above Rs 20, 000.

This way a fair assessment of the extent of the damage is ensured paving way for an amicable settlement between the insurer and the insured. The law also states that the adjuster/surveyor should submit the damage assessment report within 30 days of the surveying the damage.

When you should negotiate

If your claim is simple that is there is no ambiguity on whose at fault issue, or the damage was negligible, and required only a little or no medical treatment for the passengers, then the adjuster/surveyor may require you give an estimate for repairs, study it and if satisfactory then probably settle the claims fully.

But if your claim is complicated that is if the liability is uncertain, or if your car insurance does not have adequate coverage or simply you do not agree with your adjuster's/surveyor's settlement offer, then this is when you should begin negotiations.

Remember, it is always better to keep a written account of the conversations/discussions on the claims dealings with your insurance agent and with adjuster/surveyor and any other people involved in the claims process.

When to preempt the adjuster's/surveyor's settlement

Usually it is the insurance company that makes the first move to offer you a settlement on your claim which could be all, or part, or in worst cases even nothing none, will typically be on the low side.

After all, it is the job of the adjuster/surveyor to save the employer's money. At the same time, the adjuster/surveyor would like to close a case and has the rights to typically allow a settlement range during negotiation.

In case you are definite on the value of your claim, which is advisable to be done only after consulting a lawyer experienced in handling car accident claims cases, you could preempt your insurance company by writing a demand letter mentioning the claim amount you believe your claim is worth.

Usually, the adjuster/surveyor will return to you with a counter offer which will be predictably lower sparking off a series of negotiations. Luckily if you reach an agreement then it is ok but when he gets to the top of his range that he usually has there will be no further offers and there is an impasse.

Before moving on to find out the other options available to you as the insured, you should first find out if your claim that has been denied either in whole or in part, has any legitimate and reasonable reasons to it.

Try to find out if the denial has to do anything with the limits in your coverage. Usually, the adjuster/surveyor will send you a denial letter against your policy. Check this to see if the denial seems legitimate or not. If you still feel that your claim has been unfairly denied, read on to find out the other options before you.

However, there is a word of caution. Whatever the course of action you decide to take on reaching an impasse remember that it should be based only on facts and made at the right time. If you sit on your claim for too long, there is every possibility that you might lose the right to sue in court to get your recovery.

Other options before you even if you reach an impasse
The obvious and wise choice for you will be to seek the advice from a lawyer specialized in handling car accident claims. This will help you determine if the settlement amount you seek is reasonable or not based on the facts and the supporting documents that you intend to furnish.

On the other hand if you prefer to continue negotiations on your own without a lawyer, you could write to the insurance company explaining the situation and strengthening your claim amount with more additional documentation and/or information not previously provided.

You could also talk to the adjuster/surveyor directly or if required seek an appointment with his superior. Else, you have the option to request for an alternative dispute resolution like mediation or arbitration.

If none of this works out you may file a complaint with the concerned state or central authorities/ministries or move the court of law to sue your insurance company for Bad Faith. Of course this depends on the clause provided in your car insurance agreement.

Most insurance policies mentions about an "appraisal clause" on the preferred way to settle disputes between insurers and policyholders. Usually, the clause says that disputes must be arbitrated, where a neutral party could hear the case and decide. There is very little room for a provision that disputes can be settled through litigation or in a court of law.

BMW Active 7 series Hybrid

The ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show will showcase the different ventures the car manufacturers have been working over the past years. The German automaker BMW, together with the other auto majors such as Mercedes-Benz, Suzuki, Hyundai, will showcase its best efforts in the show.

The BMW Active Hybrid X6 and Active Hybrid 7, BMW X1, and the BMW 5 Series GT that has been empowered to woo the audience will debut in the Frankfurt Motor Show. As the name suggests, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 and Active Hybrid 7 will be eco-friendly models.

The elegantly designed hybrid cars are an epitome of their respective series. Looks apart, it is the heart of these cars that matter the most and that’s why both the cars will be powered by 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 motor. While the X6 will feature two electric motors and a 7-speed CVT transmission the 7 has a single electric motor and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The most bizarre BMW that has been manufactured in the near past and one can name the BMW 5 Series GT without a second thought an MPV, an executive car or even an estate car, because it fits into all these categories. The car is a perfect combination of the X6, 7, and the 5 series. And the car will be available in three options namely 530d, 5351, and 550i.

Another model from BMW, BMW X1, the mini x, will also be showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The X1 built based on the 3 Series foundation will be available in two options such as the one with a rear wheel drive, known as sDrive, and an all wheel drive, xDrive.

It will take another one or two years before most of the models be available to common man, but it is a true pleasure to see these cars showcased as they are a glimpse to the future of the auto industry.

Range Rover First Steer in the UK

The Range Rover is a four-wheel drive luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Land Rover in the United Kingdom, owned by the India-based Tata Motors. It was first introduced in 1970 and is still in production today. There have so far been three major generations. The original model was known simply as the Range Rover until almost the end of its life, when Land Rover introduced the name Range Rover Classic to distinguish it from its successors.

The second generation had the internal Land Rover code name "P38A", and the latest generation is internally designated "L322".

SUV is the new market propeller for auto sales in India

India is always a country which has its own pecularities. While the rest of the world is going slow on gas guzzlers and the big cars including SUVs, the market for them back home is getting attrcative with every passing day.

Inorder to cash on the building demand for SUVs in India, many global and domestic auto giants have been busy rolling out newer models or variants of their existing SUVs to pamper the senses of drivers who want to have a 4x4 driving experience.

In the brginning we had SUVs from companies like Mahindra who rolled out Scorpio, Toyota had Qualis which was phased out and Tata Motors which had Safari and Sumo. But now, there are at least 15-20 models (including imported ones) sold by a huge chunk of multinational companies in the country. Furthermore, people are snapping up these vehicles pushing the companies to either stop the bookings or launch new models.

The new innings this year was kicked off by General Motors India which launched the AT version of its Captiva SUV, followed by BMW with its X6, while others have also followed suit. While companies like Toyota are not taking additional orders for its recently-launched Fortuner SUV, Ford motor Company is offering an attractive price tag for its refreshed 2009 Endeavour SUV.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) has recently announced that it had received a record 5,000 bookings of the ‘Fortuner’ in just over a month. TKM is trying to ramp up monthly production figures from 500 to 600 units to meet high customer demand and is also planning to sell 2500 units of the ‘Fortuner’ during 2009 versus the earlier announced target of 2000 units. As of now, TKM dealers have been advised to take customer orders without advance payments, while committing to a tentative date of delivery. The vehicle is powered by a 3 litre Advanced Common-Rail Diesel engine and also features fulltime four-wheel drive.

Within a fortnight of Toyota driving in its Fortuner diesel SUV in India, segment leader Ford rolled out a new version of its Endeavour, pricing the automatic variant of the model competitively at Rs. 17.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is believed that by keeping the pricing of the automatic version of the Endeavour well below the Rs. 18.45 lakh pricing of the manual version offered by the Japanese auto titan , Ford is aiming to lure away all the Toyota customers (who are not able to buy Fortuner SUV immediately) into its own showrooms.

According to an auto industry analyst, sales have gone niche and buyers are putting their weight behind the premium SUV category which range from Rs. 13 lakh and above. SUV manufacturers have thrown in newer models; each better than the last one, got the right buyers interested, and managed to return with envious sales figures. Industry observers sees the overall market size of this category at a little over 10,000 units annually, which though small holds the potential of growing fast in the long-term with the road network getting better and more and more people driving across cities.

The resurgence of SUVs is yet another reason for the automobile companies in India to cheer about..and joining the bandwagon is now Nissan India with its X-Trail. There is promise of more action in coming days.

REVA will unveil new models at Frankfurt International Motor Show.

REVA Electric Car Company, pioneer and technology leaders in the EV market will unveil two new models at the upcoming 63rd Frankfurt International Motor Show(IAA) –REVA NXR (next revolution) and REVA NXG (next generation).

A New Vision of Mercedes-Benz

The Vision S500 is a Plug-in Hybrid concept car from Mercedes-Benz. This is another car that is going to be displayed at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show that will begin next week.

The German car maker claims that its S400 Hybrid is currently the most fuel-efficient petrol-engined luxury saloon in the world and that it is a glimpse at the future shape of things to come from the car manufacturer.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision S 500 will be the first 3-litre car in the full sized premium class. It can cover 30 km on electric power alone and consumes just 3.2 liters of petrol for every 100 kilometers.

This is possible as the engineers at Mercedes-Benz have managed to combine a powerful direct injected 3.5-litre petrol V6, a 60 bhp electric hybrid module and a next generation lithium ion battery pack with more than 10 kWh of storage capacity, which can be recharged at charging stations.

The Vision S500 is powerful enough to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 250km/h. The Vision S500 is a Plug-in Hybrid is a luxurious and safe car belonging to the next generation S-Class. It offers superior driving performance while eco-friendly compared to car in the same segment.

The car will go into production in near future; a tentative date for production has yet to be mentioned by the luxury car company. Mercedes-Benz India sells the S-Class in India and hence we expect the Vision S500 to be India bound.

Car Loans at a Glance

The festival season is at the doorstep and the banks and financial institutions are competing against each other to offer a better car loan.

The Government banks are offering loans at lower rates while the private lenders are dangling higher loan-to-value proposition. To illustrate, we have the Canara Bank, IDBI Bank and ICICI Bank which had revised their car loan interest rates in August.

Canara Bank is offering a new scheme similar to State Bank of India’s (SBI) fixed-cum-floating offer in the home and auto segments. The SBI is offering 8 per cent for the first year, 10 per cent for the next two years, while Canara Bank is charging 8.5 per cent in the first year, 9 per cent in second year and 10 per cent between third and fifth year. Seeing this, both the ICICI Bank and IDBI Bank have cut their rates.

While the rate of interest is the most attractive feature of a loan, other issues such as structure (hybrid or fixed-cum-floating), loan-to-value on offer, tenure or time period and dealers’ partners need to be considered as well. These are some of things to consider for a consumer before opting for a loan.

A car loan seeker should approach the bank for clarity on these. Some financial institutions give relaxation towards initial down-payment and one can even avail a 0.5 per cent discount as well.

A car loan seeker should look for the cheapest loan for different tenures. If the loan is for three years, SBI emerges as the best bet. The bank’s offer of a fixed rate for three years makes it an attractive proposition. The average yearly rate comes to 8.87 per cent - the lowest.

In terms of Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs), a loan of Rs 3 lakh for three years would lead to an EMI of Rs 9,400 in the first year and Rs 9,592 in the second and third year. However, a car buyer has to fork out 15 per cent of the total cost as SBI lends only up to 85 per cent of the car’s value (on road price) for new as well as second-hand cars.

For loans with tenure of three-seven years, Canara Bank has the best offer. For instance, a car loan of Rs 7 lakh for five years would mean that the average rate is 9.2 per cent a year.

The EMI will work out like this - Rs 14,362 for the first year, Rs 14,638 for the second year and Rs 14,712 from third to fifth year. The only drawback is that Canara Bank does not provide four-wheeler loans for tenures above six years. The bank funds 90 per cent of a new car’s ‘on-road’ price. For used cars, loans are given only up to 75 per cent of the car’s value. In comparison, ICICI Bank’s EMI for the same loan would come to Rs 16,379 at an average rate of 14.25 per cent.

While offers of public sector banks are quite impressive, the process could be time consuming. This is because they follow a centralised loan approval system that leads to delays in sanction and disbursal. Also, they are more stringent as far as the loan-to-value percentage goes.

If the loan seeker is unable to shell out the required 85-90 per cent, approaching private banks through direct selling agents (DSAs) or dealers will help. In fact, some DSAs claim that they can get you a 100 per cent loan on select models.

Like mutual fund distributors, both dealers and DSAs normally have partnerships with as many as four-five banks. This helps them get you a better loan-to-value deal or even rates, at times.

Audi Q5 May be Assembled in India

This is one among the many plans of Audi, a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen, which has been revealed recently.

The company is planning to locally assemble a model in India. Though the company has not specified the model that will be assembled in the country, it has given us a hint that it will be an SUV. And working on this lead the most popular guess is Audi Q5. If the guess is right, then the Q5 will be the third model from the luxury carmaker that will be assembled in India, Audi A4 and A6, being the other two.

If you are expecting a change in price then you are mistaken, the Q5 will be still priced at Rs 44.94 lakh for its 3.0 TDI Quattro and Rs 38.94 lakh for 2.0 TFSi Quattro. And there is fine explanation for this and that is the company has already launched the model at the CKD or local assembly price and the company does not differentiate between CBU and CKD.

This shift in the location of assembly is a part of the company’s plan to expand its business in the country. Audi till this time of the year has marked a 62 per cent hike in its sales compared to the last year. And this has been a true encouragement for the company in the midst of economic slowdown and it is planning to bring in new models next.

The company has also not revealed the expected date on which it will start assembling its model. With most of the information about the model and other details still shrouded in mystery, nothing stops the car lovers in the country from speculating.

Blue and Green: Frankfurt Motor Show Theme

Frankfurt Motor show or the International Motor Show (IAA) held at Frankfurt in September of every year draws car enthusiasts and car manufacturers at the same breath.

This year’s IAA is abuzz with the news of Hybrid and electric vehicles taking centre stage in the show. Every major and minor car manufacturers have lined up a slew of these hybrid and electric cars just for the event to paint the automotive world in the colours of Blue and Green.

Making a world debut in the 'Blue Drive Zone' is the Hyundai ix-Metro, a new crossover hybrid with CO2 emissions of just 80g/km. The ix-Metro is powered by an inline three-cylinder petrol engine displacing just one-litre. Direct injection, dual CVVT and turbo-charging are all combined with a six-speed dual clutch transmission to make for a highly potent compact package.

Hyundai will also be unveiling the HND-4 'Blue-Will' plug-in hybrid, which promises 40 miles of all-electric range with its parallel hybrid architecture which combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine with direct-injection technology to charge a set of lithium-polymer batteries, which in turn provides power to an electric motor to drive the front wheels.

Kia is also showing their latest hybrid offering. Among the models unveiled will be the 2010 Sorento diesel hybrid - powered by a twin-turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine mated to an electric motor to provide 161 horsepower. The all-new five- or seven-seater Kia Sorento SUV is longer and lower, with sleeker styling and better aerodynamics.

Kia will also debut a mild-hybrid version of the Kia Cee'd hybrid – the company's top-selling model in Europe. The vehicle will pair a 1.6-liter four cylinder gas engine running to a hybrid power-train.

While no stranger to hybrid technology, Toyota will be showcasing three new hybrids at the Frankfurt Show including the Lexus LF-Ch, a 5-door hatch back with Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Few details have been released on this model but more information is expected at the Show. Also from Toyota is the Toyota Auris Hybrid already proven popular in Europe with 400,000 units sold since its launch in 2007.

Not to be left out, given its iconic hybrid status, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept will also be making an appearance in advance of its fleet testing scheduled for early 2010.

Indian electric car manufacturers REVA are ready to launch two new fully electric models the REVA NXG a 4-seat family hatch-back and the REVA NXR, a sporty 2-seater. The 4-seat NXR hatch back will run on Lithium ion batteries that can attain a maximum speed of 104kmph and covers a range of 160 kms when fully charged.

Hyundai will also be unveiling the Hyundai i10 Electric, a production-ready zero emissions vehicle. Powered by a 49kW motor and a 16kWh battery, the i10 Electric promises a driving range of 100 miles and top speed of over 80 mph.

The mass of hybrids and electric vehicles due to be unveiled at Frankfurt clearly conveys the current mind-set of the auto-industry, with a strong emphasis on lower emissions. Even Porsche are jumping on the green bandwagon with the announcement of a hybrid version of the Cayenne due in 2010.

We just can’t wait to see the 63rd International Motor Show (IAA) unravel itself on 17th and will run until the 27th of September in Frankfurt.

In the Process of Defining a Small Car...

There is a good chance that your will become a small car very soon. To make matters more clear removing the cloud of confusion in the first sentence, here is a further explanation to it. The Japanese car makers Toyota and Honda Motors are the two that are looking for a change in the way India will define a small car.

The companies are asking the Indian government to “Change the criteria of classifying a small car”. And there is a good reason for this which will not only benefit the two companies but all the car makers in the country; and the better reason is that in India small cars have lower tax rates.

But will the two be able to change the mind of the Indian government into thinking different about small cars and classify a different set of cars as small cars taking into consideration the new criteria such as the emission norms, fuel efficiency, and passenger safety and not the engine capacity, which has been for a long time, the defining factor.

This request raised by the Toyota and Honda has invited different opinions. Many are of the same opinion that the government should stop defining a car as small just by considering the fuel and engine capacity.

The demand of the small cars in the country is really do the magic and that could be the reason why these companies want the Indian government to think new. It is expected that if the governments nods at changing the defining criterion then there will be a huge shuffle in the Indian car industry

The first electric chopper made a tour of the U.S. to draw attention to technologies that do not harm the environment. At the end of the tour in 2010, Smart Chopper will be sold at auction.

Good cars with unconventional looks prove beauty is not a criterion

Beauty is not the criterion for choosing a car that meets your needs. Practicality and usability continue to play a major role while buying cars. That’s what the popularity of some of the boxy shaped cars in India such as Maruti Wagon R, Toyota Innova and Mahindra XYLO, proves. The Nissan Cube which went on sale in Japan this year and will be released in the American and Canadian auto markets in the spring of 2009 is another car that looks unconventional but scores high on all other factors.

Phenomenal response to the XYLO

Since its launch on January 13, 2009, bookings for the Mahindra XYLO have crossed the 12,000 mark. The XYLO which has faced criticism for its unconventional looks has received a very positive response because of a fabulous overall package. It is emerging as the first true competitor to the Toyota Innova in the Indian multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment. The sale numbers are likely to increase in course of time with more auto enthusiasts opting for this car.

The Mahindra XYLO is equipped with an all-new 2.5 litre engine and provides a spacious interior. This MPV features well-laid out instrument cluster, leather wrapped steering wheel, height-adjustable plush seat, three-position lumbar support system, two power points, adjustable armrest and lockable under-seat storage tray.

The Wagon is a great buy for money

Today, the Wagon R is one of Maruti’s most recognized cars. The sales chart of Wagon continues to move upward in spite of its uninspiring boxy design. This compact car comes loaded with plenty of advanced interior features such as electronically controlled rear view mirrors, remote controlled fuel lid and tail gate switch and factory equipped air conditioner. Safety gadgets include dual airbags and anti-lock braking system.

Innova breaks new ground in MPV segment

The Toyota Innova is built with a purpose for a market that looks at usability. Its looks may not win it any beauty pageant but it has created a new-look statement that other MPVs are following. It can carry passengers and cargo comfortably at a more affordable price. It can accommodate eight passengers. Excellent ride quality, top performance, spacious and flexible interior, solid durability, cutting edge safety features and reliability are some of its unique features. The smooth transmission of this lengthy mini van is precise.

The Innova is available in ten variants – seven diesel and three petrol engines. The cabin boasts facilities such as shift6 and rear console, adjustable passenger’s and driver’s seats, saddle type headrests, mobile charger, glove box, door bottle holder, two tone relaxing color interior and chrome plated door inside handle.

Safety equipment includes load sensing promotion valve, large disc brakes, theft deterrent system (immobilizer) and driver and passenger side SRS airbags.

What really makes the Cube stand apart?

The Nissan Cube is a mini MPV currently sold in the Japanese market and slated for launch in the American and Canadian car markets in the spring of 2009. With a rather unconventional look, the five-passenger Cube makes practical sense to users. The hatchback can accommodate a whole lot of luggage with ease. It is packed with a 1.8-liter four cylinder engine that produces 122 horsepower. Transmission types include six-speed manual and Nissan’s automatic continuously variable transmission. With the kind of features that it offers, the Cube would be a best bet in India.

Tata Indica Vista Electric Vehicle SKD kits to be shipped to Norway

Tata Indica Vista EV (Electric Vehicle) which runs on lithium-ion batteries becomes India's second electric car export to the world - the first has been REVA G-Wiz

According to the Tata communique, the Indica Vista EV is capable of carrying four individuals, is much peppier than its petrol and diesel counterparts and is going to have a maximum speed of 151 km/hour, acceleration of 0-60 kmph in under 10 seconds, maximum power of 55 kw at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm of torque.

While Tata Motors discussions with the British government about the Vista EV launch has not made much progress for reasons of confirmatory UK government support, the Norway government has been instrumental in allowing Tatas to set up an assenmbling plant in their country. Sicne the project has reached its completiopn, Tata Motors is soon going to export semi-knocked down kits of the electric version of Indica Vista. According to media reports India’s largest vehiclemaker has earmarked Rs. 160 crore for the electric car project in Norway andplans to scale it up later for other Scandinavian markets.

It may be recalled that Tata Motors, on 3rd March 09, has displayed the electric version of Indica Vista, christened as Indica Vista EV, at the 79th Geneva Motor Show. The Indica Vista EV has been designed and developed by Tata Motors' UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre.

Tata Motors’ electric vehicles will be produced in association with Miljo Grenland / Innovasjon, Norway. Tata Motors’ UK subsidiary, Tata Motors European Technical Centre plc, has a 70 per cent stake in Miljo.

Hyundai Unveils Its EV

For Hyundai Motors, it seems like filling the void. The void of entry into electric cars segment. We have of late seen or heard most of the car makers, if not all, join the electric car manufacturing band wagon. Hyundai it looks as if, a strong believer in the adage ‘Make hay while sunshine’.

Hyundai Korea has just done the much speculated thing. After a quick heart transplant in its existing and popular small car i10, the guys in Hyundai have brought out the new Electric Vehicle (EV). This creation will most certainly star in the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month. We hear that the guys in Hyundai Motors have been slogging day in and day out on this project.

Hyundai i10, a small car and a hatch back will be positioned as an example of electric urban or city vehicle. It is said that the Hyundai i10 EV comes with a 66 bhp electric motor powered by a 16 kwh lithium-ion battery. The battery cells are provided by LG Chem. Driving range is 145 kilometers and top speed is 133 kph. 0 to 60 time is a rather leisurely 15 seconds. Hyundai also has added an intrinsic liquid thermal management system in the battery which makes the car charge upto 85 per cent in 15-minutes flat at 413 V. How cool is that?

But Hyundai has borrowed a leaf from GM Volt’s story and is leasing a low volume fleet in Korea in 2010 to understand the psyche of the people and probably would go into global production in 2012. Hyundai says that the battery cost would be above the sky limit for anybody to own at the moment forcing Hyundai will offer these vehicles as lease-only for the foreseeable future. In fact, the price of the pack is greater than the cost of an entire conventional gas-powered i10.

Now for the price update you’ll have been eagerly looking in this blog for. Ladies and Gentlemen, Hyundai i10 EV’s 16 kwh battery pack itself costs, Hold our breath, 10,000 euro. Ok, allow us to translate this complicated currency with our own. It roughly could read something like Rs. 7,00,000. Alright that might sound affordable to you, but we are being polite in reminding you it is just the cost of the battery pack and the whole car could actually cost a bomb.

But since, Hyundai has had at least the courtesy of admitting the battery pack cost of their Electric Vehicle, we also think that GM Volt’s battery cost also should be hovering around in that price range since they also use the same supplier ‘s cells and also have the intrinsic temperature management system.

Ah Guys, We also would like to add something else before we forget. This car though a hybrid in itself, the energy consumption is awesome. Hyundai i10 returns with a mind-blowing mileage of 7.8 miles per kwh. The Volt achieves 5 miles per kwh. Way to go Hyundai. It seems like Koreans can teach a lesson or two in conserving that precious energy.

For us Indians, we should be glad that we have Hyundai’s i10 doing rounds here in India. So we know that it surely would be in Indian shores sometime soon after the global production of the EV kicks off. We also are staunch believers in the adage ‘Better late than never’.
